Espresso machine guide.
The Starbucks Barista machine makes espresso, lattes and mochas.
A 1998 Starbucks demo video (opens in a new tab) runs 7½ minutes. It’s dated, but you’ll be pulling great shots in no time.
Turn it on
- The left button turns on the machine. Press it and the button turns red.
- Wait about 40 seconds for the machine to warm up.
- It’s ready when the green light on the right side is lit.
Froth the milk
- Press the lower right button to prepare the machine for frothing. The green light turns off. Wait a few seconds and it lights again.
- With the steam button pressed and the green light on, place the steaming wand just below the milk line in your pitcher.
- Turn the knob on the left side of the machine to start the steam.
Pull the shots
- Fill the portafilter and tamp the espresso.
- Line the handle up at about 45 degrees to your left and insert it into the group head. Twist the handle back so it fits tight.
- Press the top right button to start pulling shots, and press it again to stop when you’re done.
Good to know
- Make sure there’s water in the reservoir. Fill it up to the max line through the top of the machine.
- Steam the milk before you pull shots.
- Freshly ground coffee works best.
- Please don’t lose the metal mesh filter in the portafilter. The machine won’t work without it.
- We try to keep a supply of beans in the freezer. A coffee grinder and a few syrup flavors are in the pantry. Help yourself.
