Orcas Island Getaway

@ Bracken Fern

Propane fireplace.

The remote sets the flame, and these are the steps if the pilot isn’t already lit.

If you ever smell gas, leave the house right away and call 9-1-1 from outside. The home address is 65 Bracken Fern Lane, Eastsound WA 98245. Don’t light anything or flip any switches. Then let us know.

The fireplace has a remote control with a thermostat.

The remote lives in a holder on the wall near the half-wall in the living and kitchen opening. Please keep it there.

Make sure the fireplace control switch (on top of the fireplace, at the rear) is on the “thermostat” position (see Image 1 below). Use the remote to choose “OFF”, “ON” or “OFF/THERMOSTAT”. On the OFF/THERMOSTAT setting, the flame turns on and off to match the temperature you set on the remote (adjust it with “UP” or “DOWN”).

If the pilot light isn’t lit

If you can’t see the pilot burning, follow these steps first.

Important: the gas control knob can’t be turned from “PILOT” to “OFF” unless it’s partially pressed in.

  1. Turn the fireplace OFF using the burner ON/OFF switch, the remote or the thermostat. The switches are at the top right-hand corner, at the rear. (Image 1)

  2. Find the operating controls behind the bottom flip-down panel (at the front, near the floor).
Close-up of the fireplace gas controls: an ignitor button, a gas control knob marked OFF and PILOT, a heat dial, and a red label below saying the unit has been converted to propane.

  3. Turn the gas control knob so the indicator points to “OFF” and wait 5 minutes for any gas in the combustion chamber to escape. (Image 2)
  4. Turn the gas control knob counterclockwise so the indicator points to “PILOT”. Press the knob in fully. Press the igniter button several times until the pilot lights. After about a minute, release the knob. The pilot flame should keep burning. If it doesn’t stay lit, repeat, and wait longer before releasing the knob.
  5. When the pilot stays lit, turn the gas knob further counterclockwise to “ON”.
  6. Now you can use the remote for OFF, ON or THERMOSTAT.

Adjusting the flame height

The flame is adjustable, so you can tailor the look and heat. Turn the flame adjustment dial on the gas control valve. Counterclockwise raises the flame, and clockwise lowers it (Image 2).

If anything isn’t working the way these steps say, let us know and we’ll help.
